This article is the sixth in a continuing series of "Questions and Answers" about the Tavistock Health Centre.
Q. I was looking at my calendar and it seems like it must soon be time for the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of TCHI. Do you have a date picked?
A. Wow, you’re organized. Yes, we have a date. It’s Wednesday, March 29, 2006. Details about time and place will be published in various local newspapers and posted at the Health Centre.
Everyone in the community is invited and encouraged to attend. TCHI members have voting privileges. Membership costs $5 per person. You can become a member in various ways. If you bought a membership at last year’s AGM, then you are a voting member for this year’s AGM. As well, if you made a donation to TCHI in 2005 (e.g. funeral home, cash/cheque, golf tournament) then you are automatically a member and have voting privileges at this year’s AGM.
If you are not currently a member and want to become one to have voting rights at this year’s AGM you can purchase a membership at the Health Centre or at the upcoming March meeting.
Q. I made a donation to TCHI as a funeral home “in memorium” for a good friend. How does TCHI use this money?
A. First and foremost, thank you for your donation. Maintaining a health care facility is a costly undertaking. All forms of monetary contributions (e.g. freewill donations, bequests, funeral home contributions) are truly appreciated.
Monetary contributions to TCHI are used for a variety of purposes ranging from recruiting new doctors (an ongoing activity) to purchasing new and needed medical equipment to ensuring that the building meets new required building codes and improvements. Of course, we want our patient areas to be appropriately decorated and furnished so that they feel safe, warm and friendly. Thank you to those who have contributed new children’s books and toys.
One of our upcoming purchases is going to be new comfortable chairs for the waiting room. Anyone who spends time in the waiting room will be happy to read about this purchase. Who knows, you may even want to contribute to the purchase price.
Please remember that TCHI is a registered charity. Receipts for income tax purposes are provided.
Q. I heard some hammering at the clinic the other day. What’s going on?
A. Last year saw the initial phase of planned renovations to the clinic. This entailed redesigning the front entrance and improving the general appearance, making the building wheelchair accessible, and constructing a newly expanded washroom for patients.
On a current basis and going forward, priority building upgrades include:
- installing a smoke detection and emergency lighting system
- installing new carpeting and ceiling tiles in selected areas
- repainting certain areas
- replacing the chairs in the waiting room
- constructing two additional exam rooms (for the nurse practitioner and doctor).
- improving patient flow and making better use of nurse and physician time.
